A loan officer can work for a mortgage brokerage or a financial institution. Regardless of which type of service you work for, your primary function is to process mortgage loans. You can either help prospective buyers find financing for their new homes -- or you can assist with the refinancing of previous mortgages.
Mortgage brokerage or mortgage lending firms generally look for the following skills in employees:- College degree or equivalent
- Basic computer skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work a variety of hours
You may be wondering if it's possible to be a loan officer with no experience in the mortgage industry. The answer is a resounding yes. Many mortgage brokers provide training on how to become a loan officer. Prior experience is always a plus, but many companies are happy to provide the technical education.
