Successful loan officers know one secret: your career will be most effective when you establish a long term relationship with a Realtor. But establishing a relationship isn't always easy. Sometimes it requires creativity and thinking outside the box.
 
We tend to try to market to Realtors in the same way, we send out materials, postcards and newsletters, and hope to grab their attention, hopefully to make a connection. But imagine how much better your business would be, how much more effective your marketing would be, if you differentiated yourself from your competition.

Be Unforgettable

Let's face it, with the exception of your logo, your rate sheet isn't all that different from any other loan officer. So how can you expect a real estate agent to remember you when you look just like everyone else?
 
You want to make yourself unforgettable in their mind. There's only one way to do this: you need to combine the element of surprise with uniqueness.
 
I once knew a loan officer that wanted to communicate some new rates to an agent. We know sending out rate sheets isn't very exciting. So what did the loan officer do? She went to a cookie store and ordered some over sized cookies, each with a simple tag - 0% down, 100% funded, sweet deals, etc written on each cookie. Then the cookies were delivered to the agent's office.
 
Not only did she get a call from that agent thanking her, but she also made a connection with her. Whenever that agent hears that loan officer's name, she thinks about those cookies and that the loan officer is innovative.
 
 
Mistakes Can Cement Reputation

Even the best loan officer in the world is going to occasionally make mistakes. You won't be judged on the mistakes you've made, but how you recover from them.
 
When you make a simple mistake, don't be afraid to call attention to it when you solve the problem. If the right address wasn't listed on some docs, let the real estate agent know exactly how you've solved the problem and moved the loan forward. They are far more likely to be impressed with your prompt action and ability to go the extra mile, than an effort to sweep the problems under the rug.
 
 
Stop Selling, Instead Position

Develop a unique position and stick with it. In this case, we recommend you put yourself in the path of Realtors with your position.
 
Let's say you are positioning yourself as an expert with first time buyers. You could try to market to Realtors that are working with those buyers, or you could host a first-time buyers clinic.
 
Spend your time and energy marketing to the buyers. Give the Realtor an invitation to attend with the explanation that you are expecting twenty guests. They'll get the chance to see you in action dealing with client questions, plus you've created an audience for them, without any pressure or marketing effort on their behalf.
 
Think about ways you can stretch your creative spirit and make yourself memorable to Realtors. It's the first step to developing a lasting, and profitable, relationship.
